1954 Mercedes 300SL

1954 Mercedes 300SL

On the first of January, 1970 Griff Borgeson wrote, “you can't climb Everest, you can't have Monroe, and you're not likely ever to ride a rocket to the moon. But you can achieve an experience that's in the same ultimate class—you can get yourself a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.” This project was as much a joy as it was demanding. All the organic curves, lines, and shapes that make this Mercedes so regal also pose a real challenge when modelling with perfect topology. I used a combination of polygonal modelling and Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) to replicate the splendour of the 1954 Mercedes 300SL gull wing. The exterior is textured with Mercedes’ classic Silver DB180 with high gloss and speckled flakes on the exterior and MB243 Red leather interior with matching luggage set. This was a very challenging project, but again, a great learning experience and I’m very proud of the end result.
